An Americano is a popular java available at a variety of cafes. A delicious Americano iced cup is one of the greatest ways to start your day. It’s easy to make a delicious cup at home with these simple recipes. 

In this post, we’ll walk through how to make an Americano at home that’s as good as what you get in Italy or France. 

Although it may appear to be a simple drink, there are various variants of an Americano to explore. Let’s dive in!

How To Make An Americano?


You will need:

  • A mug.
  • Espresso roast coffee (It is a highly dark roast coffee).
  • Espresso machine and maker, or Aeropress.
  • Coffee scale (You should measure out your coffee beans because accuracy is critical). 
  • Cafe grinder (If you intend to use whole coffee beans).
  • Hot or almost boiling water (To add to the cafe to make your drink).
  • A tamper (To pack the cafe grounds).

Step-By-Step Guide

With Machine

Step 1: Turn on your machine

To avoid waiting for too long, make sure you turn on your machine before beginning the process. 

Step 2: Measure

Use your coffee scale to measure the exact amount of beans needed for one, two, or three shots. 

It’s best to make double (14-18 grams) because most machines can handle it simultaneously, but it depends on preference. If you like the Americano, a single shot is usually insufficient.

Step 3: Finely grind coffee beans

A coffee grinder is essential for creating outstanding espresso. Grinding the beans is also the first step to making a perfect drink. So, place those beans in your machine and turn them on to grind until they are flour-like! 

After grinding up all the beans, double-check that weight again before setting aside any leftover grounds or powder from previous batches.

Step 4: Prepare the containers

Before making your drink, use the wand to heat an empty coffee cup and mug that can hold hot water. This step ensures an even distribution of pressure in each drink before you start brewing.

Step 5: Tamp your grounds

Tamping is a necessary step in the procedure. Some machines these days tamp automatically, but if your machine doesn’t have that feature, you can still manually tamp to get a great cup at home!

Take out a clean and dry portafilter. Pour in some freshly ground, then use that tamper gently to pack it down tight — don’t be afraid if there are tiny holes here or there: That’s how crema is made!

Be gentle when tamping. Apply even pressure all around without pushing too hard on either side to make any rough edges that could affect flavor extraction.

Step 6: Make your espresso

You can brew a single, double, or triple shot in the same period, with the double and triple shots being stronger. 

Because each machine is different, do your thing and make a shot of espresso with yours. Then use the container you’ve prepared to hold your shot.

Step 7: Heat water

Add aqua according to strength, size of the mug, and your preference. The traditional ratio is two ounces for every ounce (16 Gram) of espresso used. 

However, some people like their drink weaker, so start with one or less than recommended amount before adding more if needed.

If you drink it too hot, you risk burning your tongue and taking too much time to cool down your cafe, which affects the flavor.

The perfect temperature for brewing is around 70-76 degrees celsius when using your kettle or adding water from the steam tap. The resulting drink will have better quality due to less dilution with cold tap aqua.

Step 8: Combine espresso and water

To avoid scorching the cafe, you should pour the espresso into the water rather than the other way around. In this manner, the espresso appears to blend better.

Pouring water into the coffee disturbs the flavor and ruins up the crema you worked so hard to get. So instead, pour it slowly into your cup of hot drink.

Bonus step – add your twist in

A typical Americano is just cafe and H2O, with no additional flavorings or toppings. However, if you want to make your drink even more tempting, try adding some cinnamon or honey for sweetness before pouring on milk and sugar afterward. You could also add vanilla extract if desired  – but be careful not to overdo it!

An iced Americano has a slightly different procedure. First, add cold aqua instead of hot aqua. Then pour your shot into a mug with more ice and enjoy!

With Aeropress

Step 1: Grind and measure the beans

Let’s use whole coffee beans for a more robust flavor. 

First, grind them at home on your grinder so you get sandy powder grounds. If you’re aiming for a double shot, measure about 15 to 20 grams.

Step 2: Rinse the Aeropress filter and boil aqua

Start by pouring fresh aqua into a kettle and bringing it to a boil.

Find a new paper filter and place it in your Aeropress’s bottom. Next, wet that filter by pouring some hot water onto it. If the water then drips down to your cup below, discard it. 

Step 3: Place the ground into your Aeropress, and pour hot water in

After you have ground the coffee, place it in your Aeropress. 

The water shouldn’t be boiling but should still be hot enough for brewing purposes so that all of those delicious oils inside will come out as strong flavor just like they’re meant to! 

Next, set up an espresso-type machine with funnel attachment and place it over a mug. Pour hot water over the grounds until it reaches just over the number 2 line on the Aeropress’s side.

Step 4: Steep and plunge the espresso

Steeping coffee is one of the most crucial stages in creating a perfect cup. Please don’t neglect this step since it adds additional taste and fragrance to the beans.

For standard java shots (1oz), steep for 5 seconds with stirring, then push down your plunger to press down until it reaches the bottom in around 30 seconds!

After that, carefully raise to let all of the espressos pour into the Americano.

Step 5: Boil water

Pour fresh, filtered water (to remove any impurities) into a kettle and heat until it boils, which will make your Americano tastier. Try not to use any impurities that might spoil your cup!

Step 6: Fill the serving cup with hot water

Pour as much water and coffee as you want into your serving cup. Use 2 parts water to 1 part shot of coffee for an Americano, for example.
